Tabletop Game - Game design principles
What was the purpose?
The idea of this unit was to teach us the fundamentals of coming up with ideas for and designing games. We had to come up with a tabletop game in groups of 4 and then make a prototype version of it.
What was the game?
The idea for our game was to be a simple pick up and play card game, where you would have a certain amount of lives and play cards into other peoples piles with the objective of taking all of their lives, it is a game that relies on deception to a certain degree as players cannot see the cards put into their piles until the round is over and the cards are revealed.
The game consists of two piles per player, an action pile, and a life or health pile. The main mechanic is the action pile, players take turns placing a card on their own or another players action pile. The aim is to use defending cards mostly on your own pile to cancel out attacking cards from other players, and place attacking cards onto other players to take their lives.
There are 4 categories of cards in this game;
Attack
Bow
Sword
Defense
Shield - Blocks bow attacks
Boots - Blocks sword attacks
Counter attack - Cancels out any attack
Action cards
Rotate - Each player passes action pile to the next player
Reveal top card - Reveals the top card of an action pile when placed upon it
Bluffing
Blank - Used to pretend you have taken an action
This project taught me a lot about how to make games fun, for example initially there wasnt any bluffing mechanic this was something that was developed through playing the game. I also think the simplicity of the design really helped with these fundamental skills as it allowed us to really focus on how the game was played rather than making it look really good or biting off more than we could chew.
This was one of the first units we had at University and was the first group project. Therefore another very valuable skill it taught me was how to work in a team and all the complications that can arise through that, that being said I believe we worked well as a team considering it was the first time a lot of us had met. It helped to delegate work and play to each others strengths and ultimately taught me that communication is so very key when working in a team because as soon as that stops everything starts to fall apart.
